What is Kratom’s shelf life, and what steps for long-term Kratom storage?
Humans have been benefiting from Kratom for hundreds of years. Nearly 200 years ago the natives of Southeast Asia began to experiment with the leaves. Kratom strain colors are primarily produced through the drying process to create varying effects ranging from sedation to energy. Needless to say we have since been storing Kratom powder for later use.
There are numerous variables that play a significant role in the shelf life of Kratom. Centuries ago Kratom only lasted 2 -3 weeks, but because of modern agricultural equipment and processes, along with new packaging technologies we are able to extend the shelf life dramatically.
The Stability of the Kratom Alkaloids
Kratom contains more than 20 unique alkaloids (phytochemicals). The two most important alkaloids to the effects are Mitragynine and 7-Hydroxymitragynine. These two alkaloids are responsible for the positive effects of the botanical. All of the identifiable alkaloids are trapped within the cellular walls giving stability to the plant’s effects. That being said, the alkaloid profile is always the most potent directly after the leaves are harvested. From that point, forward alkaloids will start a slow process of breaking down.
Phytochemicals like Mitragyne and 7-Hydroxymitragyne don’t last forever. It’s unfortunate but entropy will set in and cause the molecular bonds to break. Though we have some tips on keeping kratom stored for a good time, even the best protected powder will start to lose its strength.
Things you should not do when storing Kratom
Exposure to Moisture
- The exposure to moisture will not speed up the process of breaking down but it will open the possibility for mold or bacteria to grow.
Exposure to Prolonged UV Radiation or Direct Sunlight
- The UV light and radiation will also speed up the process of the molecular bond breaking down.
Fluctuating Temperature Environment
- If the temperature is fluctuating when storing your kratom you will bane the stability of the molecules. This will rapidly dismantle the purity and strength of the product.
Infiltration of Mold, Mildew
- If you find that your kratom has been infiltrated by mold or mildew, you should not take it and dispose of it immediately.
Kratom powder is very susceptible to its environment, Here at Golden Road Botanicals we have special production steps to keep your products air tight and packaged in resealable zipper pouches. We send only the freshest kratom.
Extending Kratom Shelf Life
The good news is that many people care about preserving the potency of kratom and we have some tips to keep its purity. The following measures will be sure to extend the shelf life of your kratom and help combat environmental conditions. Don’t Compromise the quality.
1.) Keep your Kratom in its original packaging or a package you are sure is airtight.
2.) Store your Kratom in a cool, dry, dark place away from direct sunlight and any moisture at all.
3.) Keep the Stored Kratom in a stable temperature environment.
4.) If your Kratom has a musty, offensive odor, do not use it, and discard it immediately. Fresh Kratom should smell earthy and natural.
5.) Use a clean, dry measuring spoon or cup when preparing your serving.
6.) Regularly inspect your Kratom and look for mold, mildew, or inclusions. Kratom powder should be fine, consistent, and uniformly colored.
Long-Term Kratom Storage (3-12 Months)
With talks of possible kratom bans, we have many customers asking how to store kratom for a long period of time while keeping it fresh.
If this is something you are interested in then you should consider getting a vacuum sealer and using it with your kratom. This will help maximize longevity. You can also consider freezing your kratom. There is evidence that freezing the kratom will slow down the molecular breakdown and greatly extend the effects kratom offers but it should be noted that any power outage could affect this method. Extreme temperature fluctuations could speed the process of kratom alkaloids breaking down.
We don’t recommend storing kratom for longer than 12 months, as even well-stored kratom begins to deteriorate at this point. But, if absolutely necessary it will still offer effects for a long time when stored properly.
How to be Sure your Kratom is Still Good
When pulling your kratom out of storage, be careful to check for signs of deterioration. Things like mold, faded colors, and loss of scent all indicate that If you have any kratom related questions, don’t hesitate to call or email. Get in touch with us!
